authorities described the fiscal cliff as a doomsday scenario that would initiate tax increases that could affect your job, your 401k, and your wallet. nearly 90% of u.s. households could see taxes go up around $3,500 next year. the uncertainty could also affect holiday shopping. the budget office warns the fiscal cliff could cause the economy to slide back into a recession and raise the unemployment rate to 9.1%. >> more will be taken out of your check. you will have less to spend. the impact will be substantial. think about the coffee shop across the street from the plant that makes weapons. the ripple effect on communities, workers, and families. >> if washington cannot get a deal done before january and we do go off the cliff, maryland would hit the ground harder than many other states. >> the question is, why? a closer look at the potential

impact. >> maryland has strong financial ties to the federal government. if washington cannot cut this deal, experts say maryland will quickly be in a recession. as politicians state their positions on how to avoid a fiscal cliff -- >> i am not going as students and seniors and middle-class families to pay down the entire deficit. >> the problem with raising tax rates on the wealthiest americans is that more than half of them are small business owners. >> maryland is most likely positioned for a financial fall. if washington must slash spending, government jobs could go down with it. nearly 6% of the state's work force are federal employees. well above the national average of 2%. maryland houses many major government institutions like fort meade, the naval academy, nih, adn the nsa.

of the fiscal year this coming june. >> the nation's highest court says it will decide whether police make connect -- may collect dna samples for people under arrest, which could have nationwide implications. the supreme court justice will review the maryland court of appeals decision that bars dna collection from suspects after their arrest. that centers around alonzo king, jr.. he was convicted of a 2003 rape based on dna evidence taken from a 2009 arrest. judge roberts block the ruling and allowed police to continue to collect dna samples. >> this is near the ruptured water main in midtown. crews still have a long way to go. the water main broke on wednesday, flooding streets and shutting down traffic in the area. live in midtown with the latest. >> ucb roadblocks sign up behind

lines. the worker is essentially, the metal and sold it to scrap yards. >> the onetime treasurer of a volunteer ambulance company is under indictment on theft charges. prosecutors say he is accused of issuing checks to himself totaling $59,000 from the middle river ambulance company. the indictment was unsealed on monday. >> the man who helped a noted presidential historians like thousands of documents from the maryland historical society was spending next year in prison. the 25-year-old was sentenced for his role in the theft. he acknowledged helping his mentor smuggle more than 60 documents out of the historical society, including a land grant signed by abraham lincoln, a signed document by george washington, and copies of speeches delivered by franklin roosevelt. they sold the items for tens of thousands of dollars. >> men who put their lives on their line -- on the line for

their country were honored with the bronze star. one is 94 years old and the other served in vietnam. the valor of these veterans exhibited during combat was described as remarkable. >> in support of the blood and fire division in central europe, his duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 253rd infantry revenant -- regiment and the army of the united states. he repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire in order to move forward and help wounded soldiers. while treating casualties, he was seriously wounded and evacuated. his actions serve as a great inspiration to his fettle -- to his fellow soldiers in the unit and save many lives. >> at a special ceremony, robert mikulski was on hand as the

sandy left behind thousands of soaked and sand-filled cars. many of those cars will be cleaned up, put back on the market, and sold to unsuspecting customers. oscar biya sellers will use the procedure known as title- washing to move cars that were once flooded and sell them elsewhere. experts recommend you do a smell test. >> the odor -- when a car sits in standing water, particularly saltwater, the car will take on a smell that is difficult to get rid of. >> another good idea, poll a vehicle history report and let a mechanic you trust take a look at it. look for debris or water lines in the car, truck, or engine department. dingy taillights or headlights could be a sign that that car could have been under water. >> adam jones is in new york tonight, one of three orioles to be honored with the gold glove award. he received another honor while
